Here comes the judge.

This year’s judge is Tim Harrison of Milwaukee, WI. He is a curious, disciplined, and friendly creative director with over 15 years of experience working at global agencies and brands in New York City.

Although his professional career has been rooted in the digital arena, such as websites, social media, and video, he admires all mediums and welcomes the opportunity to luxuriate in more traditional art forms, like painting and photography. He received a BFA in Visual Design from Loyola University Chicago (2004). After graduating college, he spent two years in Spain, harnessing his art direction skills through Miami Ad School in Madrid (2010). After 12 years in New York City, he returned to the Midwest to run his creative agency in Milwaukee. In addition to working as a creative professional, Harrison has taught visual design courses at the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco and participated in various portfolio reviews for young professionals while in NYC.

Peoples Choice Award

The public can vote for a People’s Choice Award for their favorite entry. Visitors to the gallery can cast their ballots at TNPS from April 5–19. The People’s Choice award will be announced at that time.

Phidian Art Club Musicale

Friday, April 5 @ 10:00 am 4:00 pm

Mark your calendars!

On Sunday, November 12, from 2-4 p.m., Arcomusical performs a unique program of percussion music at The Next Picture Show in Dixon, Illinois. The Phidian Art Club, established in 1890 in Dixon, Illinois, hosts this annual performance.

The Arcomusical band is based in DeKalb. They have a sister ensemble, Arcomusical Brasil, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. However, the group performing is based in DeKalb. The ensemble performs passages from the Lucumí “oro seco,” first on Afro-Cuban batá drums and then on Afro-Brazilian berimbau musical bows.

The Lucumí religion, Regla de Ocha – Ifá, is a rich and deep nature-based practice with deep cultural roots in Yorubaland, Nigeria. Its liturgy involves drumming, singing, and dancing, and the powerful and elegant musical language of the batá drums literally speaks a language that bridges humans with a pantheon of gods and goddesses known as Oricha. In Arcomusical’s unique musical bow arrangement, this drumming language takes on harmonic sophistication as the berimbau strings are tuned to beautiful intervallic ratios informed by the ascribed numerology of each of the orichas represented.

Before each musical offering, Arcomusical Director Gregory Beyer will discuss and detail the names of each of the Orishas, what they represent in the natural world, and how to best listen to this uniquely beguiling and sophisticated music.

This is a free event.

For three years in a row, the in-person awards presentations had to be canceled. The first two years, it was COVID. This year, Mother Nature decided to send miserable, stormy spring weather.
